Sparky: A Guide to an Unloved Legendary!
By jove, a machine that shoots lightning you say? One of the most intimidating feelings in Clash Royale is looking down the barrel of Sparky. The slow but incredibly powerful machine rides forward toward the enemy and can decimate crown towers with simplistic ease. Regardless, Sparky is a somewhat controversial card. Sparky has not always been beloved by the masses.
Still… Sparky is hard to use effectively without planning a strategy. Yet, he is very hard to counter. This guide is designed to boost the usability of everyone’s favorite lightning tank and teach you a few counters as well!
Sparky isn’t easy to get. As a legendary, Sparky is not only rare, he is somewhat unloved. Many players find themselves with a dusty unused sparky sitting amidst their cards. Instead of letting Sparky go to waste, try some of these strategies and get some good mileage out of him!
For this Guide you will need:
Sparky: 6 Elixir
A slow tank, Sparky moves across the field and when coming to an enemy, charges a VERY POWERFUL blast. This is so powerful that large tanks like P.E.K.K.A. can be taken out in just a few shots.
Tornado: 3 Elixir
We keep coming back to this powerful spell because it is so versatile. Not only can it murder Skeleton Army, Goblins, and Goblin barrel for an equal elixir trade, Tornado offers one of the most powerful resources in Clash. Time. Often it can pull the enemy away from your lane, or be used strategically to make a suicide bomb count (Nothing is more frustrating than getting a Giant Skeleton ganked and not being able to do any damage!) This versatile card can pull the enemy right into the leftover bombs and annihilate hordes. While Tornado isn’t necessary to use Sparky, it’s not recommended to start testing him out if you don’t have a versatile card like this to keep from being frustrated. He has a steep learning curve!
Why the Sparky Hate?
When used incorrectly, the large amount of time required to fire, the cost, and the steep learning curve have discouraged people from using Sparky as much as possible.
Sparky takes 1 second to Spawn and another 5 Seconds to charge up a shot. This time feels like ages when Sparky is vulnerable. Because of this, dropping him into active combat is a terrible idea and ends up with lost elixir and a broken machine.
He can also get distracted by weak creatures or creatures that come in groups (Such as Barbarians and Skeletons). A low level troop such as a goblin can draw the fire of Sparky. It’s frustrating to see a powerful card destroyed by weak little troops. Another disadvantage is that shielded troops can take infinite damage and still survive until they lose shields. This means a Dark Prince or Skeleton Guards can survive the first electric shot from Sparky.
Finally, spells such as Zap or Freeze, and the Ice Spirit can reset the Sparky attack timer. This means that a crafty player may save a card like that to disable Sparky at a crucial moment (Also Electric Wizard disables Sparky pretty quick too).
Still, this doesn’t mean Sparky can’t be great. It just takes some rich strategy and some good planning!
How to Make Sparky Effective
First, never use Sparky without some form of horde control. This can be rectified by using a some backup. Bomber, Wizard, Princess, Ice Wizard, Fire Spirits, Valkyrie and Night Witchare examples of great Sparky support. Place them strategically and they can kill low level troops while giving Sparky the chance to fire on the Crown towers, large troops, or high cost troops. This stops one of the biggest downfalls of Sparky.
Second, use Sparky to constantly annoy, troll, harass, defend, and offensively fight. There are many rolls this electric tank can fill. Use him effectively to turn the opponent toward him!
Third, watch your distance. Since Sir Sparks is slow, it’s useful to deploy him far back behind the crown towers or directly in front of the crown towers. This insures he is charged up and ready to roll by the time he is in combat!
Here are some card combos to take Sparky strategy to the next level!
The slow attack time can be frustrating but Rage can greatly decrease the amount of time required. Consider placing it on Sparky during a rush and watching him shoot at everything that moves!
Sparky Plays Twister
Since Sparky does splash damage, you can place Tornado and drag a large group of enemies to a central location. If placed at the Crown tower, this can be an AWESOME attack, damaging a bunch of units and the crown tower for premo damage!
One of the benefits of placing Sparky, is that psychologically it is a terrifying card. While it may be easy to counter in some instances, Sparky unchecked will win a match in just a few shots. So opponents automatically rush to kill Sparky with everything possible. This means that placing Sparky behind a crown tower will cause the enemy to focus on that specific lane.
This is where charge cards can be super-effective. Hog-Rider, Prince, Dark Prince, and Battering Ram can be deployed in the opposite lane for some quick gratuitous thrashing of the enemy. Not only will they have a split focus, if Sparky dies, you may still take a crown tower. If they don’t take the bait though, they lose to the fierce electric cannon!
Eye of Sauron
Sparky with an Inferno Tower is a VERY powerful combo. Use this for defense as well as drawing tanks such as a Giant towards the tower. Sparky can kill the Giant with the Inferno Tower very quickly. This effective combo protects sparky while wasting opponents elixir as well.
How to counter the Electric Machine
Since Sparky is slow, a Giant Skeleton can be used in conjunction with minions or minion army. One of the only ways to use Sparky is with large amounts of support units. This means that a well-placed bomb will kill an entire wave of attackers. Also Sparky can’t target air.
Another way to counter Sparky is by using Tombstone or Skeletons. Cards that leave creatures behind when destroyed as well as keep spawning creatures are great for killing Sparky provided that there isn’t such a strong defense that the horde can’t get through. Barbarians are also good for a quick counter, but be warned, Sparky can sometimes kill them if they are group together.
Give it a shot!
Hope this guide and Sparky gets you charged up to use him! It’s shocking that few players take the time to get to know Sparky! Still this wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t discuss some full deck combinations to take advantage of Sparky strategy.
